The University of Nairobi is the oldest Kenyan University. It has a rich tradition and has churned out the highest number of graduates in Kenya. However, owing to the demand for higher education in the country; other Universities were quickly set up in order to meet the growing demand for higher education among Kenyans.
As many Universities are set up every day, is the University of Nairobi (UON), still Kenya’s pre-eminent University? The University offers courses across every discipline and hence to many it is still the number one University. However, other Universities are aggressively carving out a niche for themselves in other disciplines that are giving UON a run for its money.
Engineering Textbooks
Take the case of the school of Medicine for example. Whereas previously you had to be trained at the University of Nairobi school of Medicine in order to become a doctor, now you can train at Moi University as well as at Kenyatta University. Another example is in engineering where the JKUAT University has carved itself a niche in engineering disciplines. This is partly due to their long association with the Japanese government which enabled them to equip their laboratories to high standards. It appears the UON lost this war to JKUAT though it is catching up in recent years.
The greatest discipline to have been affected is the MBA programme. Private Universities such as Strathmore and USIU are really giving the University a run for its money. While the number still has the highest enrolment of MBA students in the country, it appears that some potential students long for small personalized classes and this is where the UON seems to have lost. However, on the overall, the University continues to be a top destination for brilliant minds though cracks may be starting to appear.
